Dental Implants

Dental implants are a great alternative to replacing teeth. They are an option for people who have lost one tooth, or someone who has lost many.

Dental Implants in Acton, MA

Dental implants are titanium posts that are surgically placed into the jawbone to replace missing teeth or to support a denture. These posts serve as an artificial root for a crown when used to replace individual teeth. Dental implants result in better long-term support and function. This option is great because it requires less adjustment or shaving of surrounding teeth compared to other methods like dental bridges. Dental implants are more flexible and provide a more natural feeling than bridges or dentures.

Dental Implant Procedure

The dental implant procedure starts with an initial consultation and exam. In this consultation, we will determine if dental implants are the right choice for you and we will conduct a full exam with x-rays. Then, if any teeth need to be extracted, we will schedule that appointment. Once they are extracted, you will be given time to heal before the dental implant is placed.

After your extraction site has healed, we will place the dental implant into the jawbone. A healing cap will be placed over the implant, and we will schedule regular dental checkups so we can make sure your implant site is healing properly. This process will take about 3 months to ensure your jawbone heals around the dental implant, providing a solid base for your new artificial tooth. Once you are fully healed, the abutment and replacement tooth will be placed.

Are Dental Implants Painful?

The only painful part of the dental implant process is extracting any teeth that the implant will replace. However, during the extraction step, we will use anesthesia to make sure you are comfortable at all times. You are also able to take over-the-counter pain medications such as ibuprofen to help manage the pain.

Caring For Your Dental Implants

Some discomfort is normal after your dental implants have been placed. You will likely experience minor bleeding and minor pain near the implant site. Our office recommends that patients take Motrin for 24-48 hours after their procedure. If the bleeding persists for multiple days, it is best to contact our office. Swelling is also normal after treatment, and placing an ice pack on your cheek for 10 minutes will help. It is important to care for your dental implants so they can last as long as possible. Remember to treat them like normal teeth – brush and floss them twice a day!
